Jarrell Independent School District students excel in academic, athletic, and other extra-curricular accomplishments, with a total enrollment of approximately 650 students. The elementary school houses pre-kindergarten through 5th grade students; the middle school is home to 6th through 8th graders, and the high school covers grades 9 through 12. The students benefit from a low student to teacher ratio that averages 11.5 to 1 across the three campuses, with teachers having an average of 12 years teaching experience.
The district and each campus individually have achieved “Academically Acceptable” standing in 2006 as rated by the Texas Education Agency (TEA). The ratings are based on student performance on the TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge & Skills) and SDAA II (State-Developed Alternative Assessment) tests. In addition, there must be a high school completion rate of 75% or more and an annual dropout rate of 1.0% or less to reach this standard.
Another TEA measurement of high academic performance in Texas schools is “Gold Performance Acknowledgements (GPA).” JISD received awards in Social Studies, Writing, Science and Reading for exceeding the standard on students receiving COMMENDED on their TAKS scores. Jarrell High School received a GPA for exceeding the standard on percentage graduating under the High School Recommended Graduation Plan.
The district holds a “Superior” rating on the Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas,earning a perfect score on all of the 21 financial standards for the third consecutive year.
Jarrell High School, a 2-A school that is home to the “Cougars”, is located in Region IV, District 25. Sports opportunities include football, basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, track, and cross country. This school has an enrollment of just over 220 students. In 2004 the school drop out rate was a low 0.9%, with 46 students graduating.The voters approved a $14.9m bond issue in May 2005 for a new high school building which opened in 2008-2009 school year. Another bond issue passed in 2008 for a new elementary, which will open in the 2010-2011 school year, remodeling the existing elementary school and build a new Middle School within 5 years.
