This hospital is the largest multi-specialty practice in Texas, with more than 500 physicians who care for patients at the hospital and at 115 regional clinics throughout Central Texas. The hospital complex includes the Scott & White Children’s Hospital that has the only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit between Dallas and Austin. The Scott and White system will soon include a new Continuing Care Hospital that will offer acute care for critically ill patients with complex conditions that may affect multiple organ systems. This facility is scheduled to open in May 2007 and will be located at 546 N. Kegley Road in Temple.

Health Practitioners - According to the Texas Department of State Health Services September 2005 report, there were 519 direct patient care and primary care physicians who practiced in the region. The ratio of total persons to each physician in the area was 629.7 residents per each physician. This compares to a statewide ratio of 446.4 persons for each physician in Texas. Another way of reporting these figures is by showing the number of physicians as a ratio per 100,000 residents. In this study area, the ratio in direct patient care was 1,018.2 as compared to the statewide ratio of 642.3 in direct patient care physicians per 100,000 population as of 2005. The ratio of physicians in primary care was 1,650.7 compared to a statewide ratio of 1,463.5 physicians in primary care per 100,000 persons in the population statewide. The study area had a total of 1,111 registered nurses (RN) working in the study area, representing a ratio of 294.2 persons for each RN in the area. The number of licensed vocational nurses (LVN) who practiced in the area was 450 representing a ratio of 726.3 persons per each LVN in the area. This compared to 371.7 persons per each LVN statewide. The Texas Department of State Health Services information for September 2005 also reports that there were 131 dentists in the study area, with a ratio of 2,494.9 persons for each dentist in the area.
